Where the ghost prank started
The prank first spread on TikTok through a camera effect: start recording, and a translucent ghost with glowing red eyes floats into the frame, often with an evil laugh. People showed the screen to someone else and filmed their reaction. Coverage in September 2022 described exactly this setup.
Why the kid version backfired
Many of the early clips showed parents leaving a small child alone in a room with the phone and the filter running. Parenting sites and a trauma-informed therapist pushed back, arguing that deliberately terrifying young children for views is not harmless. That is why this site only accepts photos of adults who agreed to be pranked.
The selfie version
The version people share now flips the setup. The person in the video is relaxed, smiling and talking to the camera. Behind them, something starts to appear: a strand of hair, one huge eye, then a whole face that glides up next to theirs. They never react. The viewer does, and that gap is the joke.
How the AI version works
On Ghost Filter Prank you upload one selfie and pick Slow creep or Sudden lunge. An image-to-video model animates your photo so you blink and smile, and adds a grey ghost with long hair and white eyes coming out of your background. You get a 10-second vertical MP4 with an eerie hum and a sting.
